It is one thing to have dreams, but it is another to have the courage, discipline, and resilience to pursue them and turn them into reality. Five years ago, I applied to my PhD program knowing that the journey would not be short or easy and would require many sacrifices, but believing that it would be worth it ❤️ To the ambitious, smart, determined, and eager little girl raised in one of Durham’s low-income neighborhoods, despite the risks associated with that environment, I overcame many barriers. Statistics may have suggested otherwise, but my protective factors outweighed every risk placed before me. My educational journey has always been a priority, being one of my core values and beliefs. With that, I extend gratitude to my alma maters: NCCU, UNC Charlotte, and NC State, for providing countless opportunities that supported my growth and helped shape my goals. To my professors, advisors, and mentors, thank you. Your encouragement, guidance, and belief in me made all the difference. You didn’t just support me academically; you helped me set goals and pushed me to reach my full potential. My support system 🥹 to my husband, family, and friends, thank you for your understanding, your patience, and your encouragement along the way. As I continue to invest in myself both personally and professionally, I am a positive role model for my daughter, Ava Camille, reminding her that with determination and belief, she can achieve anything that her heart desires. As I prepare to walk across the stage in less than 3 weeks as a PhD graduate and enter the field as a school psychologist, I carry every lesson, every sacrifice, and every triumph with me. This moment is more than a milestone, it’s a testament to resilience, purpose, and faith in what is possible.
