This is one of the greatest aviation stories, and it happened in Zimbabwe in 1995. This aircraft was an Air Zimbabwe Boeing 707 flown by Captain Darryl Tarr during the Mashonaland Flying Club Air Day at Charles Prince Airport, west of Harare. Video and photographs of the event later circulated internationally because the aircraft appeared to pass just a few feet above the ground in front of spectators. For years there were rumours that the flypast was unauthorised and that the pilot had been disciplined. However, Captain Tarr has repeatedly stated that the display was fully authorised, planned, and conducted as a non-commercial flight with only three crew members on board. He said the manoeuvre was briefed in advance and that he initiated the go-around at about 30 feet using calls from the flight engineer and first officer. What made the incident so remarkable was that it involved a large Boeing 707 rather than a small aerobatic aircraft. Captain Tarr later said that at one point the aircraft’s radar altimeter indicated about six feet beneath the aircraft during the manoeuvre, although the exact height has long been debated among aviation enthusiasts. The event remains one of the most famous and controversial airshow flypasts in African aviation history. Many pilots and aviation experts regard it as an extraordinary display of skill, while others view it as unnecessarily risky because there is almost no margin for error when flying a large jet that low. Captain Tarr now flies the Boeing 777 at Emirates, his father was a very famous Rhodesian comedian, Rex Tarr.
