This weekend my family buried our father and I’ve been trying to find the words… but nothing really feels big enough to hold what this is. Losing you, Daddae… it’s not just loss. It’s a silence. A space that doesn’t close. Something you learn to carry, not something that ever leaves. But even in that… I can feel what you built. “A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children.” — Proverbs 13:22 And now I understand that in a way I never did before. Because what you left us isn’t just something we receive… it’s something we have to live up to. You gave us more than memories. You gave us identity. You gave us standards. You gave us something to stand on when life gets heavy. On Friday… the love, the family, the unity, that was your work in real time. That was your life speaking back to you. And I know, without a doubt, you were proud. I keep thinking about all the times you spoke to me about St Kitts. The way you carried it with pride. The way you made sure I knew where we come from. And now I find myself going back there again and again… not even fully realising why before. But I see it now. That’s you. You planted something in me that keeps calling me home. So every time I step foot there, it’s more than just being somewhere… it’s being connected to you. To our roots. To something bigger than all of us. That’s what you left behind. Not just in me but in all of us. So even though you’re not here physically… you haven’t left. You’re in how we move. How we carry ourselves. How we show up for each other.
