On being Called to the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court, Anguilla circuit: This ceremony came quickly. Before we could summon everyone. My aunts urgent and imminent departure from Anguilla made it inevitable. When I looked out there were many people I loved who were not there, and I felt their absence. But life does not wait for our complete guest list. I was first admitted to the Bar of England and Wales in 2018. What followed was what my learned senior, cousin and pupil master described as a “detour”. I spent myself in public service and it revealed me to myself. Life is brief and every road has taught me something the straight path could not. And now Anguilla. A new chapter written in salt air and sunlight (Which I don’t see much of anymore). To be called is to offer oneself, one’s intellect, discipline, research and knowledge in service to the Court and the people who seek your counsel. It is both privilege and responsibility. I am grateful in ways that feel too large for a caption. The the members of the Bar and the President who opened the door with grace. To Ms. Wallace who attested to my identity. To His Lordship Honourable Glasgow who accommodated and presided over my call. To my pupil masters Mr. Kerith T. Kentish and Joyce Kentish-Egan KC whose expectations do not so much rest on my shoulders as live there, permanently. To my family whose incessant prayers have carried me through rooms they never entered and across distances they could not see. To my friends who are more like family, who can hold me in joy and challenge. To my mother. Whose sacrifices were never ordinary. Who believes in me as something greater than merely her child. Believing completely in a life before the world has agreed to make room for it. Every step I take rests upon sacrifices I can never fully repay. I intend to honour it.
