Which view of the Sun stops you in your tracks? ☀️ Swipe through all four and then tell us. 1. The sharpest Sun you’ve ever seen: In October 2025, Solar Orbiter caught an active region disappearing over the Sun’s western edge — but look closely at the loops on the right, because they’re pulsating. Sound waves travel through the Sun’s interior just like earthquakes travel through Earth, and when they reach the surface, sunspots guide them upward into the corona. 2. Two eruptions and one aftermath: In January 2024, Solar Orbiter and the LASCO coronagraph joined forces to watch two eruptions tear through the Sun’s outer atmosphere. The second one is enormous, filling the entire field of view. But what comes after is just as striking, as bright magnetic loops form in the wake of the blast, glowing as reconnecting field lines release their stored energy. 3. A single view. Four completely different Suns: In April 2025, Solar Orbiter captured active regions crackling with energy right next to quiet zones, calm and diffuse, right next to coronal holes so empty they’re practically silent. All of them sitting side by side in a single frame. The Sun doesn’t ease between these states gradually, it just juxtaposes them. And that sharp boundary between them? Scientists think it’s one of the places where the solar wind is born. 4. The Sun is flipping: Every 11 years or so, the Sun’s magnetic north and south poles swap places, as differential rotation drags magnetic field towards the poles until the whole system tips. We understand roughly why it happens, but the exact mechanics of that final flip are still an open question.
