The Shoebill: A bird that looks like it came from another era. During our last Just Explorers journey in Uganda we spent almost an hour observing this incredible creature in the wetlands of Mabamba Swamp, on Lake Victoria. For long minutes he stayed almost perfectly still, only moving his head slowly while watching everything around him with those intense yellow eyes. Then suddenly a small movement… a step… and again complete stillness. Watching a shoebill in the wild is a surreal experience. Their calm, almost prehistoric presence makes you forget the passing of time. What made this encounter even more special was the distance. We were just a few meters away, sharing the same quiet moment in the middle of the swamp. No rush, no noise, just us and one of the most legendary birds in Africa. 📸 Nikon Z8 + Nikon Z 400mm f/2.8 TC A couple of curiosities about this incredible species: • Shoebills are famous for their extreme patience. They can remain completely motionless for long periods while waiting for prey like lungfish to come close enough to strike. • They are also incredibly rare. Only a few thousand individuals remain in the wild, mostly in remote wetlands of East and Central Africa. Encounters like this are exactly why I love exploring places like Uganda with small photography groups.
