The annual sheep herding of Lítla Dímun - I was fortunate enough to take part in this unique tradition, one that can only happen when the weather clears and the tides fall just right. For the past 175 years the people of Hvalba, Suðuroy (Faroe Islands) set out in a wooden sailboat toward the tiny, unpopulated, diamond-shaped island. A dark silhouette rising out of the North Atlantic mist. There, they gather the sheep that were set free in spring to roam and graze the wild, windswept slopes. The weather here can be fierce and unforgiving, and the animals toughen with it. Some say their meat carries the taste of the island itself - salt, wind and stone. Before dawn, the shepherds sail beneath the clouds, climb the steep cliffs of Lítla Dímun and drive the sheep down towards the sea. The strongest rams and lambs are gathered, loaded onto the boat, and carried home by the waves. A ritual that has outlasted decades, connecting people, place and tradition in one timeless moment.
