An (inter)stellar side profile! This photo of a spiral galaxy named UGC 10043 was snapped by @NASAHubble. It is located about 150 million light-years away from Earth in the constellation Serpens. Spiral galaxies like our Milky Way are known for their swirling arms, so why does this image just show a straight line? It’s because we are viewing this galaxy on its edge rather than looking at its face. This galaxy is mostly disc-like in shape, but a round glow of light protrudes from its center on both sides. That is its central bulge, a tight concentration of older stars — a structure that’s classic to spiral galaxies. Credit: ESA/Hubble & NASA, R. Windhorst, W. Keel #NASA #Space #Galaxy

Seeing a raccoon holding up a peace sign or two lions yelling at each other is a great way to get you to care about the environment, says Tom Sullam (@sullamphoto), cofounder of the annual Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards. In his TED Talk, not only does he share laugh-out-loud photos from across the planet, but he also explains how these images help us connect and care about nature in a deeply motivating way.
